Shikakai,reetha and amla diy shampoo!!

I love doing DIYs(do it yourself) ,this is one of the shampoos I started using after I experienced a lot of hair loss a few years back. Initially I started using it 2-3 times a week for about 6 months , then i got lazy and decreased it to once per week, mostly in the weekend because it involves lot of work, keep reading, you will know why I'm saying this.
You need to be very patient with it since your hair is used to market bought shampoos, give your hair sometime to adjust with the No-poo(no shampoo) trend. It might not show results immediately, such is the case with every homemade remedy.
I am a follower of rati's blog imbb(Indian makeup and beauty blog) , i took this recipe from imbb, there are many bloggers who have their own shikakai recipe, and it's all the same with little difference here and there.

Let's see the benefits of reetha, shikakai and amla :

Reetha or soapnuts:

Reetha, also known as soap nut, is a round wrinkly fruit with a round black hard nut inside.
Reetha or soap nut is quite a popular natural product which is extensively used in the natural hair care. Reetha is a round wrinkly fruit with a round black hard nut inside. The outer skin is reddish brown in color and is used in the hair care products like shampoos, conditioners etc. Soap nut is also used to deep condition the winter wear in India. Reetha is also antibacterial and antifungal in nature which is why it is good for hair products.
Since, ancient times, ritha has been used for hair treatment. Due to side effects of chemical shampoos, the relevance of soapnuts is again gaining momentum.  Washing with ritha provides shining and silky hair. It is used as important components in soaps and shampoos for hair wash.
It helps to prevent dandruff and white flakes.
Using reetha as a hair Shampoo is economical and giving gentler effects to your hair. The Reetha liquid makes your hair shinier and softer. It is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal in nature and keeps your scalp free from dandruff and prevents hair loss. It shows no side-effects in spite of using it daily that is not with chemical shampoo.
Shikakai

Edit

Acacia concinna has been used traditionally for hair care in the Indian Subcontinent since ancient times. It is one of the Ayurvedicmedicinal plants. The fruit is known in Indiaas shikakai (Hindi: शिकाकाई, śikākāīKannada: ಸಿಗೆಕಾಯಿ; Tamil: சிகைக்காய் - literally "hair-fruit", sigai=tresses and kaay=fruit;) "fruit for hair" in its use as a traditional shampoo.[5] In order to prepare it the fruit pods, leaves and bark of the plant are dried, ground into a powder, then made into a paste. While this traditional shampoo does not produce the normal amount of lather that a sulfate-containing shampoo would, it is considered a good cleanser. It is mild, having a naturally low pH, and doesn't strip hair of natural oils. Usually no conditioner is needed, for shikakai also acts as a detangler.[6] An infusion of the leaves has been used in anti-dandruffpreparations.[citation needed]

Amazing Benefits Of Amla For Hair
Amla, an excellent hair tonic, has played a key role in long, thick, and beautiful hair of India women. This wonderful berry acts as a natural conditioner, minimizes hair loss and greying, and encourages strong and healthy hair growth.

What you will need:
-Few pods of shikakai (depending on your hair length)

-few reetha seeds(depending on your hair length)

- handful of dried amla (depending on your hair length)

I bought it all from APMC vashi for Rs 100 per kilo, it easily lasted me for about 6 months.
The quantity depends on your hair length,I use more amla because it's a conditioner and less reetha..

How to make it:

Take a vessel add the seeds and amla fill half of it with water, the water taken depends on the amount of ingredients

Bring everything to a boil , or till you see suds(or foam that comes in soap and shampoos) appearing on the surface, reetha seeds are very hard so you have to boil it for long till it's really tender enough to squash it with your hands.

Once it's tender remove it and bring it to room temperature .now press all the boiled ingredients with your hands and scoop the juices out of it till all the goodness of the ingredients gets incorporated in the water.

Now take a strainer or a muslin cloth or kitchen napkin. I use a kitchen napkin ,got it from apna bazaar for 10 bucks :p.
Please strain it, if you are going to use it without straining, the pulp will stick to your hair and you will spend ages in the shower trying to remove it and it will also take double the amount of water (we have water scarcity, you remember?? )

Strain all the pulp till you are left with just the juice of it
This juice is your shikakai and reetha shampoo.

Point to be noted :p
1) it's not for kids.. It stings eyes like hell... Don't let it enter your eyes... and Please DON'T use it on kids!!
2) while buying reetha make sure to buy seedless if it's available..because the seeds add to the weight and it's of no use to us
3) don't their away the reetha seeds it can be used for washing clothes, especially kids clothes it shoes gentle effect on the skin it's allergic free and helps to maintain the original colour of the cloth.
4) I make fresh batch every time since I just make it once a week..I don't like storing it in fridge.. But it depends on you!
5) one more way of using reetha is boiling reetha and hibiscus flowers together and using the concoction for washing your hair(this ones my sisters friend mittal's recipe.. She has been using it for years and she has a hair to die for )
6)if you have iron vessel.use it for boiling, you can even soak all the ingredients overnight so it would take less time on stove.
7) you can also add any essential oil of your choice to the end product , to increase it's benefits
8)it will not lather like store bought shampoos but it will remove all the dust, grime and oil without effecting the pH of the hair.trust me !
7)keep PATIENCE.

I use this in dry hair in shower, it works for me that way. You will have to try it to see how it suits you.
I let it sit for few mins before washing it off, since I oil my hair before shower.I use this shampoo 3-4 times till all the oil comes out and it's squeaky clean.some people use conditioner after it because it's very drying ,if you feel the same dont hesitate to use a conditioner after shampooing, I usually don't
All in all this shampoo did wonders for my dry, frizzy curly hair but it takes it's own sweet little time
In the begining it seems a lot of work but once you get a knack of it , it gets better ,moreover it will be WORTH it!!
